How to Roll for Stats in D&D

Back to Help

Introduction

In Dungeons & Dragons, rolling for stats is a classic method to determine your character's abilities. It adds an element of randomness and can lead to unique and varied characters. I have done extensive research, with 15 different methods of rolling for stats, over 900 rolls, and decided to use the following method for this campaign. It gives fairly balanced stats, with one "hero stat" for that one thing you're really good at. The method i use is the d4,d6,d8. where you roll three dice, and each die is responcible for two stats. The method has a order, but the outcome stat numbers doesnt have to be in order, just like the traditional way of rolling for stats. But unlike the traditional way, each player always starts out with the same average score of 12,5, making it varied enough, yet controllable.

Steps to Roll for Stats

  1. Roll one d4, one d6 and one d8
  2. The first stat is 10 plus the number on your d4
  3. The next stat is 13 minus the same d4 number
  4. The next stat is 9 plus the number on your d6
  5. The next stat is 14 minus the same d6 number
  6. The next stat is 9 plus the number on your d8
  7. The last stat is 20 minus the same d8 number
  8. Assign these scores to your character's different abilities (Strength, Dexterity, Constitution, Intelligence, Wisdom, and Charisma).

Example

  1. Roll one d4, i got a 1, one d6, i got a 5, and one d8, i got a 3
  2. 10 plus 1 (what i rolled on my d4) is 11
  3. 13 minus 1 (the same d4 number) is 12
  4. 9 plus 5 (my d6) is 14
  5. 14 minus 5 (the same d6 number) is 9
  6. 9 plus 3 (my d8) is 12
  7. 20 minus 3 (the same d8 number) is 17
  8. I then assigned these scores: Strength 17, Dexterity 12, Constitution 14, Intelligence 9, Wisdom 12, and Charisma 11.
